The surrounding area is beautiful in its own right, inland you have rolling hills covered with olive, pine, vines and orchards, interspaced with many a holiday home, farms and of course the trulli and masseria that the area is famous for. Toward the coast there is a much flatter plain mainly of olive groves leading down to the shoreline, which can vary from rocky outcrop to fine sand dunes.

The old quarter is covered elsewhere on this site and the newer parts of Ostuni are a bustling, typical Italian town of low rise apartment blocks spreading to the outskirts of fine villas. Every road seems to have a local shop selling everything that you would expect, but long ago disappeared in the UK, small butchers, bakers, greengrocers where the locals shop every day for their fresh produce.

Local bars always seem to have groups of men sitting or standing outside chatting in groups that spill out into the road. If you are driving round town one of the first things you notice is the apparent death wish of pedestrians who just stroll across or even hold a conversation in the centre of the street, with no apparent concern for the cars, yet when you try to cross the road yourself at a crossing nobody stops! Many of the narrower roads have a no pavement or one so small with lots of house steps, driveways, cars parked over them or washing in the way as to make them useless.
